Sayyid Al-Hakeem: Iraq Needs National Unity to Face Internal and External Challenges – Address to Tribal Leaders and Dignitaries

During a key dialogue session at the Baghdad Diwan of Iraqi tribal sheikhs and dignitaries, His Eminence Sayyid Ammar Al-Hakeem, Head of the National State Powers’ Alliance, extended his Eid Al-Fitr greetings to the attendees, describing the holiday as a divine reward after a month of fasting, and urging all to seek forgiveness and spiritual renewal.
Speaking on the current situation, H.E. highlighted the exceptional challenges Iraq is facing amidst ongoing regional and international shifts—particularly changes in leadership in some countries and the intensified israeli aggression in the region, which has further escalated tensions.
Sayyid Al-Hakeem emphasized that Iraq is not directly targeted—neither overtly nor covertly—but is subject to regional pressures, especially concerning strategic issues like electricity and the gas used to power its stations. H.E. called for a careful and deliberate approach in addressing these challenges, while upholding Iraq’s independence and neutrality.
Sayyid Al-Hakeem stressed the need to reject sectarian and ethnic incitement, underscoring the importance of national unity among Iraq’s diverse communities. “Social cohesion among our components strengthens national unity,” H.E. said, warning against any attempts to sow division or unrest that threaten Iraq’s national security.
On the economic front, His Eminence urged a departure from the rentier state model and called for building a diversified economy that supports agriculture, industry, and tourism. H.E. also noted progress in certain sectors and a decline in unemployment, praising the recent national census for revealing these positive developments.
Regarding the upcoming elections, Sayyid Al-Hakeem confirmed they would proceed as scheduled, dismissing rumors of delay. He stressed the importance of fair and healthy competition and encouraged the selection of the most competent candidates to serve Iraq’s interests.
In closing, H.E. called for an end to tribal disputes and the need for restraint when confronting challenges. He commended efforts to combat the scourge of drug abuse and strengthen social cohesion, and also pointed to ongoing efforts to address Iraq’s water crisis by promoting modern irrigation technologies to reduce consumption.
On this occasion, Sayyid Al-Hakeem renewed his call for collective action in securing Iraq’s stability and prosperity amid the difficult conditions facing the region.
